Peru’s country information:

Little is known of the history of the region comprising present-day Peru before the rise of the Incas. The earlier settlers were people unrelated to the Incas. Possibly they began to migrate from Central America. Some aspects of the history and culture of the pre-Inca Indian people have been determined from the surviving examples of their art and architecture. Peru is situated in the western part of South America. On the north it is bordered by Ecuador and Colombia, on the east by Brazil and Bolivia, and on the south by Chile. The entire west side of Peru is bordered by the Pacific Ocean. Peru's size is 1,285,215 sq. km (496,095 sq. miles). To compare: that is roughly France, Italy and Sweden together. Or the US-states of Texas, New York, California and Maine together. Peru has a rich ethnic diversity. About 45% of the population is Indian. Most of these Indians are Quechua (descendants of the Inca's). The Quechua populate the highlands of the Sierra. A smaller group of Indians speak Aymara or Aymara-related languages. These people can be found in the Selva (the Amazon rainforests) and around Lake Titicaca. Although Spanish is the official language of Peru, Quechua is an official recognized second language.
